DO you think you could swim the length of the English Channel (22 miles) in 12 weeks?
If you’re up for the challenge and fancy raising money for charity too, you can sign up online and swim the distance at any of Active Tameside’s four 25-metre swimming pools.
The Aspire Channel Swim is open to anyone who is able to swim competently and can raise sponsorship money for Aspire – the national charity for spinal cord injury. Aspire provide practical help to people who have been paralysed by spinal cord injury, supporting them to become independent.
You can cover the 22 miles in your own time, split between as many sessions as you want, from September 11 until December 4. If you spread your swim over the full 12 weeks, you would need to cover 118 lengths per week in a 25-metre swimming pool (22 miles is 1,416 lengths in total).
If you don’t fancy tackling the challenge by yourself, why not sign up and swim with a friend, or a group of colleagues? You can record your lengthCh
If you take part in the challenge, you can win a prize from Zoggs, depending on how much money you can raise for Aspire. You can also check the online leader board to discover your swim ranking and find out who else is taking part.
You can sign up for the Aspire Channel Swim now and start fundraising while you get in some swimming practice in advance, to prepare yourself for the challenge. Once you have registered, you will receive a welcome pack, which includes an Aspire Channel Swim hat, sponsorship form and a card to record your swim distances on.
The 25-metre swimming pools at Active Ashton, Copley, Denton and Medlock are ideal for carrying out your challenge.
You can swim once a week or split it into smaller, more manageable multiple weekly swims.
