Discovery of remains halts Aldi supermarket car park works

WORKMEN creating a new car park at the Aldi supermarket in Stalybridge made a grave discovery when they unearthed remains, which are believed to be human, while they were carrying out excavations.

Police were called to the former Tameside Council car park at Leech Street/Back Melbourne Street site at just before 2pm on November 21 when the discovery was made and they cordoned off the area.

Local trader Peter Taylor, whose family has had a town centre electrical business for the last 97 years, revealed the car park was once a burial ground for the Methodist church that is no longer on the site.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed remains had been found, adding it is believed to be a former burial ground.

“Enquiries are ongoing to to discover whether they are human,” he explained.

The discovery of the remains will delay further work on the car park and possibly force it to be abandoned given that it was an old burial ground.
