POLICE are investigating after a road traffic collision caused considerable damage to the listed gates at Stamford Park, Stalybridge.
One of the ornate stone pillars at the Coronation Gates, erected to mark the Queen’s coronation, was demolished, as were the gates.
There was also damage to the stone perimeter wall and railings and a nearby speed camera was also demolished.
The gates at the junction of Stamford Street and Astley Road were cordoned off by tape to prevent the public accessing the park through that entrance.
Greenspace manager Nicola Marshall explained police are involved and Tameside Council are in process of getting quotes to repair the damage and claim from the motorist’s insurance company.
