TOP consultants from Slimming World in Stalybridge, Dukinfield and Denton are encouraging men not to be shy and to join one of their groups to start their weight loss journey this new year.
“Weight problems are common among both men and women, but figures show men typically keep weight worries to themselves for as long as six years, as many just don’t like to ask for help,” explained the consultants.
“The good news is more and more men are becoming open to the idea of getting support and there are now more than 60,000 men using Slimming World groups around the country.”
Mark Williams joined his local Slimming World group on December 31, 2016 and has lost five stone since then.
He said: “Since joining I have never looked back! I started gaining weight 26 years ago when my eldest son was born and I gave up playing rugby.
“Since then I have tried every conceivable diet and weight loss programme – but never Slimming World until now – and I have never reached my target.
“At my heaviest I was 21.5 stone and the lightest I have been is 17 stone, which was five years ago to qualify for heart surgery. I became more active and maintained my weight at around 17 stone.
“But then old bad habits crept in, compounded by severe leg muscle pain due to peripheral vascular disease along with severe arthritis in both knees and so my weight crept up again.
“Three years ago, my weight had crept up to over 20 stone. Last year I was diagnosed as prediabetic, and that was the trigger for me to take positive steps to shed the weight and change my lifestyle.
“Now, weighing over five stone less, my blood sugar is in normal limits and I am now a viable candidate for knee replacement surgery.
“I am so much fitter and confident. In fact I am so enamored with the plan that I am seriously contemplating applying to become a Slimming World Consultant to help others achieve what I have.”
Mark’s Consultant said: “Our generous Food Optimising eating plan means it’s possible to satisfy even the biggest of appetites and, whether it’s steak and home-baked chips, a Sunday Roast or a spicy curry, you can still enjoy all of your favourite meals – and with a beer on the side too.
“In group, men love the mix of support and healthy competition they get from being part of a club as they are cheered on their journey to success.
“They also love the fact that, as they lose weight and gain confidence, they are supported and rewarded to get more active, if they want to.
“It’s definitely not a one-way street – the men in my group bring an enormous amount to the rest of us too. They’re fun and friendly and help ensure our group is always full of laughter.
“We’d love to welcome more men to all of our group and so our message to men who are worried about their weight is to come along and give Slimming World a try.”
Anyone who’d like to lose weight and join Slimming World is welcome at any of the groups. To find out more go online: www.slimmingworld.co.uk
