CHAMPION charity fundraiser Steve Bullows completed his 100-race challenge for charity Mummy’s Star with the Conwy half-marathon in Wales.
Supported by friends, many who ran with him, Millbrook-based Steve crossed the finish line to be met by Mummy’s Star founder Peter Walroth.
To celebrate the end of three years of races up and down the country, covering around 1,200 miles, a lot more travelling and hours of time given up and raising more than £7,500, Steve was presented with a Mummy’s Star Trophy and medal.
Steve, who is a teaching assistant at St Paul’s Primary, Stalybridge, said: “I’m so relieved I completed the challenge and in the process raised the awareness of such a special charity.
“I cannot imagine the pain and anguish women endure who find out not only are they pregnant but they have cancer as well.”
Steve became involved with Mummy’s Star when Marie Garrigan, his colleague at St Paul’s who was aware of his fundraising for other charities, mentioned a new one in Glossop that had been launched.
Founder Peter’s wife Marie died three months after the birth of their son Merlin in 2012.
What was initially an offer by Steve to complete ten 10k runs for Mummy’s Star in 2014 has since snowballed.
Apart from fundraising, Steve says it has been important in spreading the message about Mummy’s Star, the only charity in UK and Ireland dedicated to women and their families affected by cancer during pregnancy.
It supports mothers with cancer by offering practical help when needed.
Often pregnancy masks the symptoms of cancer until it is too late and Steve says 17 of the mums have died since his involvement with the charity.
It was back in 2012 that Steve did his first charity run for Macmillan Cancer after his sister-in-lew Louise Bullows died of cancer.
Since that first race five years ago, Steve has completed approaching 140 runs for various charities.
And he won’t be giving up running and has already embarked on a personal challenge to run 25 marathons. With 12 completed already he is well on the way.
