STALYBRIDGE funeral directors H Revell & Sons Ltd proudly lays claim to be the town’s longest-established family business dating back to 1888.
And as the company, that is based at 96 Stamford Street, celebrates its 130th anniversary it is now in its sixth generation.
Denise Roberts (nee Revell) currently runs the business with daughter Cassie Roberts, 29, who is the latest in the line.
Intrigued by the history of the family firm, Cassie says she has traced the business on paper to 1888, adding it is conceivable that it has been in existence for even longer.
It was Cassie’s mother’s great-great-grandfather Harry Revell who founded the funeral directors in an era before motorised transport. The business was initially based on Wakefield Road.
Harry also had a joinery business that he ran with son Norman so they were able to manufacture their own coffins.
It was Cassie’s great-grandparents Norman and Annie who in 1970 bought the current headquarters on Stamford Street as well as a chapel of rest on Penny Meadow, Ashton.
Cassie says the biggest change over the last 130 years has been increase in cremations and decrease in burials.
She added there is today a lot more music played at funerals as opposed to hymns being sung.
Cassie described H Revell & Sons Ltd as a traditional funeral directors.
