COATS, Tails & Nails is a professional dog grooming service set up earlier this year by Ruth Hopwood.
Ruth describes it as a relaxed environment as she works from home on Rayners Close, Stalybridge.
Husband Michael, a plumbing and heating engineer, transformed their garage into a state-of-the-art salon.
Ruth offers a full range of services, from full groom, wash, fluff dry and brush out to hand stripping, ear cleans, nail trims, puppy and spa treatments.
Ruth, who is building up her client base, says her approach is one of softly-softly.
She said: “Quite often I am presented with dogs that are very nervous about certain aspects of, and sometimes, the whole grooming experience.
“Therefore, if a dog is really uncomfortable, I will not force them but will move on to another area and try to return to this area either later in the groom or after they have had a break and a little play outside.”
Ruth has a 13-year-old cocker spaniel, Honey who she admits was not a good model when she was starting out.
“She is not a typical dog that ‘dances’ on the table. She lies on the table, allows you to clip her and then rolls over,” explained Ruth.
Ruth has always lived in homes with pets so had no misgivings about a change to a canine occupation.
She spent 36 years working for the National Blood Service in a variety of PA/secretarial roles and following this was PA to the principal at a secondary school in Salford.
Ruth trained at the Anrich Veterinary Hospital, Wigan, where she gained a professional diploma in dog grooming and canine first aid qualification.
This is recognised and accredited by the Pet Industry Federation and British Dog Groomers’ Association. Coats, Tails & Nails is also fully insured.
