STALYBRIDGE Archery Club’s have-a-go day on Sunday, June 24 was a great success, with an estimated 850 firing arrows.
Club officials were surprised by the turnout given their event clashed with England’s World Cup game against Panama as last year attracted 1,000 would-be archers.
Vice-chair Paul Carney estimated that, along with parents, there were probably around 1,400 in attendance.
He said: “We thought it would be more relaxed in the afternoon, but there was a steady stream throughout the day.
“Archery GB promotes have-a-go days and some clubs are proud to get 50 through the door.
“We are in a high-profile spot on Mottram Road and promote the event widely. Because it is on the same day as the carnival we see the same faces every year as they visit us on their way to the carnival.”
Paul added they gave out 70 membership packs and he would expect half that number to sign up for a beginners’ course.
