Tom Brown is Stalybridge Celtic super-sub in win against Colwyn Bay

STALYBRIDGE CELTIC 2, COLWYN BAY 1

AN inspired substitution by manager Simon Haworth helped Stalybridge Celtic beat Colwyn Bay at Bower Fold on Saturday in their latest pre-season friendly.

Celtic, who handed a debut to new centre-back signing Michael Clarke, were 1-0 behind when Brown replaced Ross Dent in a straight swop in midfield.

But within three minutes Brown, a Stalybridge lad, had scored twice to transform Celtic’s fortunes.

Celtic, who were without five regulars, fell behind to a ninth minute goal from Danny Bartle, a travesty as it was Bay’s only moment of danger.

They ought to have been 3-1 ahead at half time as John Marsden struck the upright with a free kick and also brought a brilliant save to deny Marsden as well as Billy Akrigg.

Brown’s two goals were both from close range and more akin to a striker displaying a predatory instinct in front of goal.

Late on there was one let off when Bartle struck the crossbar and Rick Buckler’s follow-up shot was spectacularly cleared off the line by Niall Flint.

* Clarke, (28), left Stockport County at the end of the season after being club went more towards becoming full-time, something he was reluctant to do as he runs a family painting and decorating business.

He joined Curzon Ashton but, after failing to establish a regular first-team place pre-season, decided to switch to Celtic.
