Drama group hopes to avoid final curtain with next show

DUKINFIELD Operatic and Dramatic Society has admitted the success of its October show Thank You For The Musicals at the George Lawton Hall, Mossley, is vitally important for the future of the 73-year-old group.

“This is a make-or-break show for the society,” conceded committee member John Mercer after revealing last year’s award-winning Dirty Rotten Scoundrels incurred a £10,000 loss due to poor ticket sales.

“After losing that amount of money, a massive sum for a group like ours, we have to make a profit this year.”

John revealed the cost of staging one of their shows is between £20,000 and £30,000.

“The cost of music rights is a major item and then there are costumes and lots of little extras,” he explained.

Thank You For The Musicals is an exciting original idea being brought together by a slick production team of director Paul Whitworth, choreographer Jean Johnson and vocal coach Paul Firth.

This extravaganza is an opportunity to see the society perform selections from musicals not yet available to amateurs, such as Mamma Mia, Hamilton, The Greatest Showman and We Will Rock You but also some selections from classics such as Cabaret, Annie and Barnum.

Staged at the George Lawton Hall between Wednesday, October 24 and Saturday, October 27 at 7.15pm with a matinee on the Saturday at 2.15pm.

Tickets are priced at £10 for the Wednesday and £15 each for all other performances, also this year the society is offering a family ticket for the matinee performance – four tickets for £45.
