STALYBRIDGE St Paul’s have secured eight wins in a row in their hunt for the division three title in the Derbyshire and Cheshire League.
Five victories in the past month included a vital one-wicket success against second-placed Birch Vale, with other victories coming against Charlesworth, High Lane, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Hollingworth.
There have been some stellar batting performances with Mike Whitworth playing two superb innings (66 not out v Birch Vale and 58 v Chapel) and Mike Hatton’s 51 v Hollingworth.
He has been backed up with some much-needed stability at the top of the order from Richard Wright (scoring 34, 36 and 44 over the month) and middle-order hitter Joe Robinson batting consistently (34, 40 and 31), with other top batting performances coming from Rob Mallett (61 v High Lane) and a 65-run vital last-wicket partnership v Charlesworth from Gary Sandiford (47no) and James Brady.
Bowling wise, Adam Harwick picked up five wickets for 30 in the crunch game vs Birch Vale with captain Jamie Brownhill (4-25 v Offerton and 4-20 v Hollingworth) and Martin Hatton (4-6 from five overs v Chapel) also chipping in.
Promotion from division three is now more or less assured but the aim is wrapping up the league title before the final game on September 15.
The second team looked to secure their place in division five over the last month having put in some much-improved performances.
There were welcome wins against Hazel Grove and Dinting, sandwiching defeats to Birch Vale and Hayfield. Steve Monks (42), Jordan Elliott (53), Khalid Akram (51), Maurice Barber (40) and Tony Mooney (42no) have all contributed with some strong batting, with Ahmed Hayat (4-27 v Hayfield) and Krunal Bhatt (4-55 v Hayfield) best individual bowling performers.
A good month overall with the club also planning for the end-of-season race/curry night, provided by club sponsors Candolim, on Saturday, September 15, when trophies will also be handed out.
