STALYBRIDGE Celtic’s hopes of an FA Cup windfall are over after they were knocked out by Radcliffe Borough.
Ben Wharton’s 29th minute goal proved enough to eliminate Simon Haworth’s side from the competition.
But it was not for the want of trying as Matty Wolfenden hit the crossbar just three minutes in with a header.
However, Wharton was allowed to head home when a free-kick was whipped into the danger area.
Liam Tongue and Luke Wall also had sight of goal but just before the hour, Steven Irwin wasted a glorious chance when he tried to chip Radcliffe goalkeeper Ollie Martin, only for the ball to go wide.
Michael Clarke had people asking, ‘How has he not scored?’ when he did not convert a gilt-edged opportunity from just three yards out, firing wide on 67 minutes.
And Chris Sharp saw his effort cleared off the line.
Celtic currently sit 13th in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division as they try to rebuild following last season’s relegation.
They are next in action on Tuesday when they head to the east coast to face Whitby Town, who sit just one point outside the play-off places.
