Stalybridge shop in running to be named Britain’s Best Small Shop of 2018

An independent gift shop in Stalybridge, Cheshire, which has expanded to two stores as well as an online business, is on the shortlist of retailers in the running to be named Britain’s Best Small Shop of 2018.

Magpie’s Nest attributes its success to its commitment to make the shopping experience memorable for its customers, through a varied range of products, visual merchandising and high quality customer service. Its “layaway club” enables customers to save an item and pay off for it in instalments that suit their budgets.

This has been increasingly popular in the current financial climate and helps customers avoid credit card debt.

It generates regular income, which is good for cashflow and means that customers are returning more frequently to make a payment, which also creates more shopping opportunities.

The Best Small Shops competition, managed by the Independent Retailers Confederation (IRC) sponsored by booost, the brand new loyalty, gift and promotions app for independent retailers and their customers, celebrates the commitment and creativity of independent retailers on the UK’s High Streets and the central role they play in their local communities.

The winner will be announced at an event at the Houses of Parliament on November 13th.

“We regularly sponsor and support local community events hold in-store events for charities, like our Puppy Love fundraiser for the local dogs home,” explains owner Liz Hanley.

“Having two locations has meant we have streamlined our product ranges and are working with brands on an exclusivity basis to keep our offering unique in the local area.

Our constant reinvestment in the business combined with a team of passionate staff enables us to give our customers a positively memorable shopping experience.”

“Despite all of the bad headlines and the high-profile closures of larger stores, we firmly believe that specialist independent retailers can thrive in this climate by delivering a truly unique retail experience,” explains Mark Walmsley, Chairman of the Independent Retailers Confederation.

“The Best Small Shops competition enables us celebrate this unique industry, the passion, service, flexibility and knowledge of independent shop owners offer and show customers what makes independent retailers so special.”
