It’s a pet’s world as popular business moves to expand

PETZ World, one of the town’s longest-established retail businesses, has moved to a new home and been rebranded as Stalybridge Pets and Aquatics.

It has been a short hop from 45 to 17 Melbourne Street for Michelle Hennessy who has taken over the former Music Corner.

With twice the amount of space, the business has ample room to develop, especially Michelle’s expanding dog grooming business.

Michelle is in the process of applying for a licence for live animals and there are plans to soon have an aquatics centre.

There will be additional space for more animal cages and extra stock with a couple of new suppliers coming on board.

As the new premises has a basement that will be ideal for the dog grooming business that Michelle set up in Armentieres Square two years ago.

The dog grooming moved to 45 Melbourne Street when Michelle acquired the business from Henry Buckett in August 2017, but again space was tight.

Previously the pet shop was owned by John Aston, the Manchester United footballer who was in their 1968 European Cup winning team.

Michelle previously had a pet food shop and florists in Audenshaw and describes herself as an animal lover – she owns dogs, a horse and tortoise.

And Michelle’s six-year-old German shepherd Yogi was the special superstar guest at the official opening of Stalybridge Pets and Aquatics on November 17.

Yogi appeared in the BBC Ceebies programme Class Dismissed, a children’s comedy in which the dog was headmaster ‘Mr Barker’ and had to wear a tie and a lanyard and could bark on command.

The job specification stipulated Yogi would also have to wear glasses, but in the end that was not required, with Michelle describing him as a “bit of a performer”.
