Five set for promotion to first-team squad

FIVE Stalybridge Celtic academy players have been promoted to the first-team squad.
They are goalkeeper Aidan Winterbotom, right back Jake Storey, centre-back Callum Penistone, strikers Eli Fernandes and Brice Pouamoun,
Academy director David Sullivan is delighted, declaring it is reward for the hard work and dedication of the lads who are aged 16-18.
He said: “It is down to the individuals and their dedication and character.
“They have worked hard in training and in the gym on their own.
“As a result, they are physically strong, fast, hardly ever injured, competitive and humble.
“We are very much a team and they have all worked as hard as each other, and they all have a change of making it.
“I have told them don’t be over-awed and enjoy the experience.”
The addition of the players will add numbers to a small first-team squad.
Indeed they had only 12 players available for last week’s Cheshire Senior Cup win at Alsager Town.
Manager Steve Burr has signed goalkeeper Jack Walton on loan from Barnsley for the remainder of the season.
But he has been forced to release James Coates saying he hasn’t the resources to carry two goalkeepers.
Celtic are retaining Coates’ registration, though, until he gets fixed up with a new club.
Full-back Lee Neville has returned to former club Trafford.
Stalybridge Celtic academy is looking for its next generation of up-and-coming players.
It is holding trials at Stockport Sports Village on March 5.

Central defender Luke Ashworth was named Stalybridge Celtic player-of-the-month for December.
Due to a number of games being postponed throughout the month, the decision was made by Burr.
“Luke never misses training and has been ever-present since the start of the season,” he said.
