The annual Tameside Careers and Apprenticeships Exhibition at Stalybridge Civic Hall on Thursday, June 21 featured engaging interactive activities for pupils, from businesses in a variety of industries alongside local and neighbouring training providers.

Stallholders designed their activities to make them interesting to young people who wouldn’t have previously considered a career in their industry.

More than 1,000 young people from 12 secondary schools across the borough attended the exhibition that had a number of sessions throughout the day.

TCAE was designed to support schools in delivering effective careers information, advice and guidance to pupils.

The 2018 event was sponsored by Tameside Council, Ashton Sixth Form College, Tameside College and Clarendon Sixth Form College.

The partnership of Tameside Council and Tameside’s leading providers of further education was a joint commitment to bringing the best experience to local pupils at the event.

There were approximately 45 stands from industries including protective services, engineering, animal welfare, digital/media, education, music technology and catering as well as Greater Manchester Police, Brother UK, Haywill Animal Rescue, Purple Wi-Fi, Affinity Media and other local organisations.

The exhibition allowed pupils to engage with various businesses and learning providers to discuss their future education and career pathways.

Pupils attending were able to try on police riot gear with Greater Manchester Police, engage in virtual reality simulations with the Royal Army, film a highlights reel with Affinity Media, and have a go at block paving with TMBC engineering along with many other activities.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council executive member for lifelong learning, skills and employment, said: “It’s vital for young people to be aware of the range of opportunities available to them when they leave school, so they can make informed decisions on their future.

“I was delighted to welcome back Tameside Careers and Apprenticeships Exhibition, an excellent event where pupils get some hands-on experience and were able to meet representatives from local businesses.

“Pupils attending discovered there’s a wealth of industries and exciting careers available to them here in Tameside.”
