SIMON Haworth’s rebuilding of Stalybridge Celtic has been completed with the capture of four further players.
And with Tom Brown and Aiden Winterbottom also returning from last season, Celtic’s manager has assembled a 20-strong playing squad.
Centre-back Michael Clarke was the marquee capture having played and captained Stockport County last season in National League North.
The 29-year-old left because Stockport were going more towards being full-time and he was unable to commit through working for the family painting and decorating business.
Clarke trained with Curzon Ashton pre-season but, unable to command a regular place, decided to join Celtic.
“I wanted Michael before he joined Curzon and it is a statement to have signed a defender of his quality,” explained Haworth.
Clarke had also played previously for Woodley Sports, Chester, Northwich Victoria and Rushall Olympic who bought him for £2,000.
Haworth has also brought in two players from EFL clubs, goalkeeper Jake Turner and left-back Scott Wilson.
Turner, 19, who had a short spell with Celtic last season, has been loaned until January from Bolton Wanderers.
The England U18 international had trained with Celtic throughout pre-season.
Haworth said: “Jake has shown what a good goalkeeper he is. He needs games which is why Bolton are keen he joined us.
“Jake will train with us and, when we aren’t training, he will do so at Bolton.”
Haworth used his contacts to capture left-back Wilson on an initial one-month loan from Burnley where he plays for the U23s.
“In the short time he has been with us, Scott has shown quality on the ball,” said Haworth.
Haworth had no qualms about bringing in midfielder Niall Flint having worked with the midfield player at Shrewsbury Town.
Flint played for the Shews up to U18s and since leaving the club he has played for Telford, Scarborough Athletic, Sutton Coldfield Town twice, Matlock Town and Stafford Rangers.
Midfielder Brown, who is from Stalybridge, and Dukinfield-based Winterbottom were both at Bower Fold last season.
• Celtic have allowed three players to leave on dual registration forms to get games.
Striker Lee Knight and defender Jack Taylor have joined Padiham while full-back Stephen Rigby has moved to St Helens Town. Charlie Duke, Jack Charles and George West, who had been on trial, have all left the club.
