Manager Simon Haworth described it as an “arm wrestle” as Stalybridge Celtic and Buxton fought out a second stalemate in as many weeks at Bower Fold.
Last Saturday’s 1-1 draw in Evo Stik League, premier division was followed by today’s (November 10) goalless game in the second qualifying round of The Buildbase FA Trophy.
And now the two teams must meet for the third time in 11 days for a replay at Silverlands on Tuesday when the winners will receive a £4,000 prize cheque.
Clubs have the choice of settling the tie on the day or favouring a replay – Celtic wanted the winner decided on the day, but Buxton didn’t.
Haworth believed Celtic “shaded the game” which they did on chances created, though there weren’t many of them.
He said: “Chris Sharp, Matt Wolfenden and Liam Tongue had chances, Tongue hitting the post.
“You are talking fine margins and Buxton are hard to beat and I should imagine it will be another arm wrestle on Tuesday.”
In the opening half Wolfenden fired narrowly wide while Sharp had a header cleared off the goalline, and that was the summary of the action.
Celtic’s two clear-cut chances of the second period both fell to Liam Tongue who had been moved from right back to central midfield for this game.
First a 30-yard drive was well turned to safety by goalkeeper Theo Roberts after 73 minutes.
And not long after another long-range effort from Tongue was superbly turned on to the upright by Roberts diving low to his right.
Celtic: Wharton, Tongue, Wilson, Smalley, Brady, Clarke, Bakkor, Rule, Sharp (Caton 79), Wolfenden (Wilkinson 70), Dent (Kengni 55). Subs (not used): Marx, Winterbottom.
