MILLBROOK girl Miah Maddock-Hodgins is off to America in April to try and help the Team England ParaCheer HipHop retain its world title.
The 15-year-old Mossley Hollins High School student was a member of the England team that triumphed in Orlando, Florida, in April 2018 at the World Cheerleading Championships.
Though it is named as a para team, Miah is an able-bodied member of the team.
It will be a busy time as three days later she will also in action at the same venue for the Manchester-based dance school Urbanized Dance Academy (UDA).
They have qualified for the USASF World Championships as one of the three top clubs from England.
Miah, who began dancing aged four and cheerleading at the age of eight, was the youngest member of the England team at last year’s finals as it is an open-age competition.
There was a further success for UDA on January 20 when they took part in the northern round of the International Cheerleading Committee competition at Blackpool where they moved a step closer to a national title.
There is excitement as cheerleading becomes an Olympic sport in Tokyo and Miah has ambitions in the future to compete at them.
UDA team members have to fund the whole trip themselves which Miah’s mother Caroline says is challenging financially as many of the team are from low-income households.
• UDA is looking for potential sponsors to help fund the trip. Anybody interested can email Caroline at firstname.lastname@example.org
