A TEENAGER who has had a major weight loss is urging people in Tameside to get behind a month-long healthy food festival aimed at showing people that slimming down does not have to mean going hungry.
Brittany Chambers, 16, has dropped four stone since joining her Slimming World group in September and recently celebrated the start of Free Food February.
The annual campaign, in its fifth year, is named after Free Food, which can be enjoyed without weighing, counting or measuring on Slimming World’s famous Food Optimising eating plan.
The launch party also saw Brittany named the group’s 2019 Young Slimmer of the Year.
Free Food February is being held in 19,000 Slimming World groups up and down the UK from February 3 to March 2 and aims to show how the organisation’s members lose weight without hunger and often discover (or rediscover) a love of cooking.
It coincides with the publication of Slimming World’s latest recipe book Free Food on the Go, which is packed full of delicious snacks and meals that are perfect for enjoying while out and about.
Brittany, who joined Slimming World in September 2018, certainly believes Free Food has been key to her success.
She said: “At first I couldn’t believe how much food I could eat and still lose weight.
“It was so different from what I’d expected because I always thought losing weight meant not eating very much or cutting out all your favourite meals.
“Thanks to the plan and picking up ideas shared by other members in group, I’ve learned loads about food and cooking, and I can still enjoy burgers and chips, spaghetti bolognese and curries – all packed full of Free Food, of course.
“I’ve honestly never once felt hungry since joining Slimming World.”
She says getting encouragement to become more active and receiving support from the group, including the consultant, have also been huge factors in her success.
Brittany said: “I don’t think I could have achieved everything I have without them.
“Life’s completely different for me now and I’m so grateful to Slimming World for that – and proud of myself too.”
It was Brittany’s fellow slimmers who voted for her in the 2019 Young Slimmer of the Year competition.
Her commitment and input in group has inspired them all and Brittany is cherished in group as a true inspiration.
She has learned healthy habits that will stay with her for life, so worrying about her weight is definitely a thing of the past.
Maria Palma, from the Stalybridge Slimming World group, said: “There have been so many stories in the news about child obesity recently and we know that young people desperately need help and support to make changes.
“I hope Brittany and her passion for healthy eating and Free Food will inspire people of all ages to get involved with Free Food February and make a change of their own.
“We certainly had a great time celebrating her achievements and what better way to celebrate than with food – we officially got Free Food February off to a super start.”
