Promoted St Paul’s ready for challenge

NEWLY-PROMOTED Stalybridge St Paul’s are relishing a new challenge as they prepare for life in division two of the Derbyshire and Cheshire League.

It was a memorable 2018 campaign for Stalybridge after they win the league and went up as champions.

The club has been busy gearing up for the 2019 season, which begins on April 27, with pre-season nets taking place every week since mid-February.

Captain Jamie Brownhill is pleased with preparations, explaining: “All of last season’s players have returned and we may also have three or four new ones to strengthen the squad, though they have not yet signed.

“The second division is a big step up, but I would expect us to be challenging high up in the division as we have a strong squad.”

The second team retained its place in division five, with the season starting on April 27. Turnout at nets has been healthy, meaning plenty of competition in the two teams.

The first team starts off the season with a trip to Buxworth before hosting Hadfield. The seconds host Offerton first up, before also travelling to Buxworth.

The Bissenden Cup draw has also taken place with Stalybridge facing a trip to either Woodley or Whaley Bridge, with the T20 competition seeing local ties against Broadbottom, Newton, Dinting and Hollingworth.

The club has managed to secure a new shirt sponsor with local business Candolim Curry House agreeing a three-year deal, adding to their sponsorship of the club’s T20 team. Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club has also signed up to continue its sponsorship for 2019.

As well as all the playing and sponsorship activity taking place, the club has also arranged a comedy night that will take place on Friday, April 12 with tickets costing £12.

This is open to all and if this is of interest, please contact the club via any of the social media channels (Facebook, Twitter or Instagram) or call 07920 056659.

Stalybridge also has its ‘cricket force weekend’ over April 6-7 when players and club officials give their ground a spruce up in readiness for the new campaign.
