IF you want a wheelie convenient way to get into work, why not try a bike?
That’s what Roxanna Joyce and Andrea Winterbottom have done and they recommend it to anyone. It is quick, convenient and healthy.
Brompton folding bikes can be hired through the council. Roxanna and Andrea both have one and they have found it has transformed their journey to Tameside One.
Andrea, a library assistant, explained: “A friend gave me a bike but it was too big. I happened to mention this to Ian Saxon and lo and behold he turned up with a fold-up bike which was a perfect size for me – I was like Goldilocks.
“I travel in from Dukinfield and at first it was really hard getting up the small hill on Scotland Street – a hamster in a wheel springs to mind – but now I’m a pro. I get up earlier, look forward to starting my day, and know I can change and wash in our great new building.
“At 44 I feel fitter, have more energy, and am truly hooked on cycling. I would tell the world to give it a go. It really does inspire me to push myself more and the muscles are toning too.”
Roxanna, a business support officer with workforce development, added: “I had a bike which I used regularly, but it was stolen at end of last year which left me heartbroken.
“I got rid of my car and was using public transport but I really missed having a bike for getting around. When I heard about the possibility of hiring one through work I jumped at the opportunity.
“Recently, I moved into Ashton and now I not only cycle in to work, I plan to cycle to meetings wherever possible.
“My bike is a fun and convenient way to get regular exercise into my busy routine. I would definitely recommend it.”
Council staff can get a bicycle through salary sacrifice via Cyclescheme. Full information is available on the staff portal.
