COPLEY Academy were winners of a girls’ World Cup football tournament at Manchester United’s The Cliff training ground.
The event involved schools which are partners with Manchester United Foundation and Copley were drawn as England which raised expectations at their first-ever tournament.
The Copley girls were unbeaten in nine mini matches to top the pool and qualify for the semi-finals.
Copley came from a goal down to beat Loreto High School (USA) 2-1 through two late goals.
In the final, Copley defeated Oldham Academy North (Netherlands) 3-1 with two goals from Eleanor Ashton and another strike from Emily Higgins.
The Copley team was Eleanor Ashton, Casey Lomas, Elle Cranston, Nicole Leah, Holly Milligan, Eva Lythgoe, Chantelle Kilbride, Holly Heuton and Emily Higgins.
Assistant principal Jo Tidbury said: “I am thoroughly proud of the girls’ achievement.
“The World Cup certainly came home to Copley on the day another national side let us down (England women lost to USA in the semi-finals of the women’s World Cup).
“I was delighted how well they acquitted themselves and with their conduct during games.”
