Carol is brought home after tragic death in Spain airport

A STALYBRIDGE woman who died at foreign airport has come home after a fundraising effort broke its original target.

Carol Roberts sadly died on holiday in Spain

Carol Roberts was travelling back from Reus in Spain when she collapsed and died earlier this month.

It is believed she suffered from ventricular fibrillation, when the heart speeds up rapidly, causing her to collapse and suffer a head injury from which she died.

She was with her partner David Gault, who was returning to begin treatment after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour.

Now her body has come back to Stalybridge after a huge £5,690 was raised in an online appeal.

Carol, 64, had three children, Leila, Beth and Daniel, and Leila spoke of the family’s gratitude to everyone who gave money to the cause.

She said: “The support has been overwhelming, as well as the lovely messages from everyone.

“Now she’s home, we’re working with funeral directors to come up with a date for her funeral.

“Mum was bringing David back. He’s very, very poorly. At first she thought he had a stroke but then it was found he has a brain tumour, which is inoperable.

“The money raised went a long way in helping us to get our mum home and it’s comforting to know that she is back where she belongs.

“Thank you to each and everyone of you for your kind words and generous donations.

“It goes without saying that myself, Daniel and Beth will be forever grateful for all the support over the past few weeks. From the bottom of our hearts thank you.”

Carol, who was a member at 360 Fitness in Stalybridge, did not have travel insurance, hence the fundraising effort which was set up by Lisa Gallagher.

Leila added: “When someone is a member at a gym, you think they are fit, so the news came as an even bigger shock.”

The original target was £4,000 but the response saw the cost of about £5,500 to have her body flown back home met in full.

“Carol lived and loved life,” Lisa said. “She lived in the moment and brought laughter, and fun wherever she went.

“It has been a huge shock to her family and friends that this fun and active lady passed away suddenly in the airport on her way home from Spain.”
