STAMFORD and Saddleworth golf clubs have teamed up to organise the Yanks Classic, a 36-hole pro-am.The event will be held over the Yanks weekend with 18 holes played at Stamford on Friday, August 7 and the second round at Saddleworth the following day.
It will be a Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) accredited pro-am with a field of 30 teams of four, each including one professional.
Mark Smith, Stamford’s professional, said: “Saddleworth pro Andy Earlam used to be my assistant and we always said we wanted to organise a 36-hole competition between the clubs.
“We decided to organise it to coincide with Yanks and have that as a theme for the weekend.”
Smith added the PGA hold similar format competitions including the Cornwall Festival which is three rounds at three different courses and there is a similar three round event in the Scottish Highlands.
Ryan Jones is the new holder of the yellow jersey in Stamford’s Winter League after week 12.
Jones overhauled long-time leader Chris Exton after the event on Sunday (Jan 26).
Second on the leaderboard is Dave Rawlinson, third Tony Smith while Danny Jebb is fourth.
The Winter League is determined by the top eight results from the 20 weeks of competition.
John Ogden was the winner of week seven with 45 points in the singles Stableford.
Runner-up was Graham Dowd (42) while third was Andy Angelone (40) on the card from Martin Dwyer and Kevin Duffy.
Gregg Schofield claimed top spot in week eight with 44 points from second-placed Phil Easter (42).
Paul Murray (40) was third on the card from Steve Clough and Kevin Duffy.
Steve Clough the victor in week nine with 44 points from Kimberley Mulvaney (42), Paul Murray (41), Phil Easter and Andy Swift (both 40).
Week 10 saw Wayne Morris top the leaderboard with 42 points on the card from Gregg Schofield.
Duncan Hough (41) was third on the card from David Rawlinson.
After week 11 was not included because of the number of temporary greens in use, the competition resumed for week 12 which was won by Ryan Jones with 45 points.
Runner-up was Tony Smith (41) while Matthew Merson (41) was third on the card from Duncan Hough.
• The draws have been made for the Manchester and District knockouts.
In the Dunham Forest Trophy, Stamford have a home preliminary round tie against Warrington while Ashton are at Manchester.
The preliminary round of the City Glass Men’s team Foursomes provided Stamford with a home tie against Houghwood.
And in the preliminary round of the Archie Preston Mixed Trophy, Stamford are away to Breightmet and Ashton visit Cheadle.
